WOMEN IN FOCUS, INC. LITERACY
PROGRAM

The Women In Focus Literacy
Committee coordinates an ongoing literacy program to raise awareness of the
importance of literacy for young people. We are committed to improving the
education of minority and low income children.
Committee’s Mission
-
Promote reading as a positive
activity and experience for young children;
-
Encourage parents and children to
read and learn to enjoy reading together;
-
Donate age-appropriate books to all
families and children who participate in the program.
Program Summary
From 2001-2007, Women In Focus
volunteers read to children in the waiting room of the South Madison Health
and Family Center. While parents and children waited to see a doctor or
nurse, the Women In Focus volunteers distributed literature to parents, and
read to and gave the children books to take home. During its six-year
duration, thousands of books were distributed to Madison area children.
In 2008, the Literacy Program moved
to the Madison YWCA. Monthly reading sessions with the Y’s single parents
and their pre-school children are interactive and promote the joy of
learning. Each child is given a book to take home after every session. The
parents’ meeting is held concurrently and they receive information, tips and
techniques for encouraging and reading to their children. A Book Fair is
planned for all the children who live at the Y.
Studies have shown that the earlier
and more frequently a child is read to in preschool years, the higher the
probability that the child will be successful in school. Women In Focus
applies for grants and seeks donations of funds to purchase age appropriate
books in English and Spanish.
