2008 Women of Distinction Announced

On May 29, 2008, the YWCA of Madison will present the 34th annual Women of Distinction Awards at the Concourse Hotel. Marcia Anderson, Mary Burke, Theola Carter, Vera Riley and Cheryl Rosen Weston will be honored for work exemplary to our mission: Empowering women and eliminating racism.

Since 1974, 171 women have been honored. Their community service, professional achievement, integrity, leadership and dedication to the lives of others and to the quality of life for all stands as a reflection of the YWCA’s historic mission and values..

The YWCA Women of Distinction awards were established in 1974 to increase community awareness and appreciation of the diverse contributions of women in the work force and in the community.

Marcia Anderson was born in Beloit, Wisconsin and grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois. She received her B.A. from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska in 1979. In 1984, she earned a J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law. Her professional positions include staff attorney at the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City, practicing employment and environmental law with private firms and a public utility, Clerk of Court for the US Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit’s Bankruptcy Appellate Panel in Boston and the Clerk of Court for the US Bankruptcy Court here in Madison.

In April 2007, she was confirmed by the U.S. Senate for promotion to Brigadier General and was promoted to that rank effective March 15, 2008. She is currently the Commander of an Army Reserve unit located in Arlington Heights, Illinois with support responsibilities for 3500 soldiers located at locations throughout fifteen western states.

Marcia is an active member of the community. Her volunteer commitments include Women In Focus, Inc., Madison Civics Club, Center for Veterans Issues, Inc. board member, volunteering as a mentor for minority students at the UW Law School and was recently confirmed for a seat on the Wisconsin Board of Veteran’s Affairs. “Working from within to help others realize their potential as well as to improve the organization” has been her goal throughout her years of service to the government and the military.
